I would be heartbroken if I missed a whale sighting…especially if I missed it because I had my face buried in my cell phone. Of course, I would never have my cell phone out on a boat because I’m the gal who would somehow manage to drop it in the water…sinking to the bottom of the ocean….bye bye phone…but I digress.

The picture above reminded me of a recent experience at a cozy little restaurant in my town. The atmosphere is fun, the food is great, the beer is craft, and the music is live. But on this particular evening, I dropped in early (before the live music and crowd) to visit with a friend. There was a new bartender. He took care of our order and chit-chatted a minute then took off to stock up. However, it wasn’t long before he had his phone out, not paying attention to his customers. I mean, if he was Googling something for us, that would have been one thing, but he wasn’t; he was Facebooking or something not work related. And if that wasn’t bad enough, it wasn’t long before I noticed the owner doing the same thing!

You are in the hospitality business, aren’t you? Then be hospitable. Even if you’re not actively waiting on customers, engage with them somehow. Look up from your phone (in fact, just put that thing AWAY), the TV, even your other work activities to ensure your customers aren’t in need of a utensil, a beverage, a check in (“can I get you anything?”), or just a smile. You never know what you might see…or what you might miss if you don’t.
